Police and Fire
These emergency services are provided through joint boards for the 5 Councils in the Lothian & Borders region. Just over half of the police budget comes direct from the Scottish Government. The remainder of the police budget and the entire fire budget comes from requisitions made on the 5 councils.
The planned increases in budget mainly reflect the increasing cost of police and fire pensions, although planned changes in the provision of the fire service in East Lothian in 2010/11 also have a significant effect.
Efficiency savings apply to these services also, and although police and fire spending is not under the direct control of the Council, spending proposals will be reviewed for efficiency through the joint board processes available.
