Book Fair

As you already know, this week is Book Fair Week.  The children will all get slots on Tuesday, when their teacher will take them into the annexe hall to view the books.  We shall be running a book fair cafe for parents first thing in the morning and after school, please come in for a chat and a cup of something hot - if you buy a book, so much the better.  Donations for refreshments will go towards our Brazilian Street Children Charity.

To mark this event the children have been involved in a bookmark completion.  Last Friday, 7th November, Dr Strachan, our Parent Council Chair, kindly came in and had the difficult job of judging the colourful results.  The winners were

Nursery am - Bruce   Nursery pm - Luke

P1 - Summer

P2 - Leo

P3 - Isabelle

Very many congratulations to the winners and all visitors will have an opportunity of viewing the fantastic bookmarks, which are displayed in the annexe hall, alongside the Book Fair.

Playground Fun

Bonnie

All the boys and girl have been enjoying playing with our playground toys, kindly donated by our PTA.  As you can see from the photos, the children are learning many complex skills whilst being active and having fun!   Look at the fun Laura, Brandon, Campbell, Nikolas, Angus, Jack and Jordan are having.

Halloween Disco

On Thursday 30th October, the Primary 2 and Primary 3s had a scarily, spooky time at the Halloween Disco.  The costumes were fantastic - what a great deal of effort went into the costumes!!! I think, you will agree, it is hard to spot who is dressed up!  Can you recognise - Findlay and Christy,  Erin and Oliver,  Dylan, Keiran, Adam, Nicholas and Cameron?

Autumn Poems!

Primary 3/9 have been thinking about autumn and the recent changes to our environment.  We observed changes in the trees outside, collected leaves and did leaf rubbings using crayon.  They look really colourful in our classroom! We also wrote acrostic autumn poems.  We thought about lots of autumn words and things that we might see at this time of year.  We wrote a poem together as a class first then worked in pairs to create our own.  This is our class poem.

Acorns fall from the trees,

Unbelievably windy,

Tumbling leaves fall off the trees,

Umbrellas to keep you dry,

Mist is often here,

Not very good weather.

Unicef - Rights Respecting School Award

Today we had our first meeting towards this award with Bruce Wilkinson, UNICEF education officer.

The idea of this award is that children and young people can raise their achievement at school and improve the quality of their own and their families’ lives if they learn exactly what their rights and responsibilities are according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and how to use this understanding as a guide to living. UNICEF’s Rights Respecting School Award is an effective way of inspiring and supporting schools who want to provide children with a rights-respecting guide to living.

Bruce and Miss Ross spoke to a group of children, staff and interested parents and thought we were well on our way to gaining stage 1. He is coming back to help us work on an assemblyin December. We will keep you posted and more information on this award can be found at www.unicef.org.uk/rrsa

Fischy Music Comes To Town

The P2s had a fabby dabby do time with Fischy Music on Wednesday.  They enjoyed singing the songs they knew and learned lots of new ones.  A fantastic time was had by all!!!

Celebrating Success

On Friday, 3rd October, we went to Port Seton Community Centre to take part in East Lothian’s Celebrating Success Forum.  We took an exhibit displaying the children’s work of our visit to Innerwick.  This illustrated how we used the environment to motivate our learners using a variety of experiences and settings.  A  special thanks to Miss Jones, Mrs Adams, Finlay, Kate and Rachel for making this event such a success.

The children were asked for their thoughts about the event -

Rachel - “At first I was nervous but I was very happy to be there”

Kate - “I was happy when I had to answer questions”

Finlay - “I have always wanted to be a business man and this was like business stuff so I really wanted to do it”

Primary 3 topic Growth and Ourselves.

Primary 3 have been investigating facts on the human body for our topic on ‘Growth and Ourselves’. We have learnt that there are “206 bones in our body” said Matthew Black and Ben McKinnel. ” We thought that the smallest bone in your body was in your finger or your toe.” said Rachel Armstrong and Kate Heggie, “but it is in fact in your ear!” Sam Russell found out an amazing fact that he shared with his class, ‘If we did not have a brain in our heads then our skull could be filled with the same amount of liquid as you would find in 12 cans of drink!’

Pinocchio

Pinocchio and FelixM and M productions visited the school on 3rd September and treated us all to a great stage performance of Pinocchio.  The ‘baddy’ visited the nursery before the performance to show how warm and friendly he really was - that helped reassure our youngest in the audience.
