Primary 6 leared a new game on Thursday the 8th of May when Monsieur Curt took the children outside for a spot of bowling. In France this game is called ‘petanque’ and the rules are different from the bowling we are used to. Ryan was in charge of the camera and I think he has got some good shots of his classmates enjoying some active learning!

On Thursday 15th of May Mary and Amy represented Gullane at the North Berwick Cluster Final of the KNEX Challenge. The girls had to read a design brief, plan, build and test a model before submitting to a final test. This time round a motor was added to the kit and they had to incorporate this into their design. The girls worked really well together and designed a very good model which was successful in crossing the bridge from the challenge.

On Friday 9th of May Primary 6 took part in a KNEX challenge. They had to plan, design and build a vehicle that could carry a shoe, without dropping it when it was driven down a hill. The class worked well together in pairs and the winning team were Mary and Amy who will be going to NBHS next week to take part in another challenge against children from other schools. Well done Mary and Amy!

Your map must include a key. As well as your map, you should include a written piece of work which explains simply, what the E.U. is and how/why the flag was designed.

As part of our Europe project, the class have been finding out about flags. This morning they were given the following challenge.

Produce two flags and an information sheet. First, go to the nava.org website and read the information about making and designing flags.
The first flag you produce should be that of the country given to you last week. The second flag should use the colours of your country but be redesigned to represent your home-team. As well as your flags, your group should present at least an A4 side of paper which explains what a flag is for, and gives the reader some information about flags.

Remember to assign new task roles, and use your agreed method for making decisions.

We have been looking at how information is organised in a newspaper. The class were given this challenge.

Use a current newspaper to find and cut out articles on the following - an accident report, a local news item, an international news item, a letter to the editor, a book/film/theatre report, a birth/death notice, a science/environmental item, a classified ad and a weather forecast.

Using a large sheet of card/paper print the newspaper’s name and date in bold heading at the top.

Glue and label your articles onto it. Use sub-headings for the different sections.

Create a mobile for an infant’s cot/crib. The mobile should be made up entirely of 3D objects, which you have made using nets. The mobile should include at least 3 different 3D objects. You can make as many 3D objects to hang from the mobile as you feel appropriate. The mobile should take on a theme of your choosing and be stimulating and bright to look at.

We were given a challange to create a poster giving descriptions on diffrent shapes (Trapezium, rhombus, square, circle, pentagon, kite, equalateral triangle, isoscles triangle, hexagon, octogan, rectangle.) and some people did a few others (like chevron, eclipse and parallelogram). We were in pairs and used stencils ect. to draw the shapes. Here are some examples: Square: A square is like a rectangle but with all equal sides (making it an equilateral) and all angles are right angles. Circle: A circle is a closed curve/line.
Then we presented our posters to the rest of a class.
