Fidra books

There are a couple of recent posts on Fidra books that may be of interest to any EduBuzz or Edinburgh based readers.
The childrens’ writer  Steve Augarde  is visiting the shop  “on Thursday 8th May at 7.30pm to talk about the joys and problems of writing for children and young adults and to give plenty of practical advice on how [...]

Ask the teacher

When my tall, laid back (read “idle”), 15 year old son comes in from school each day, the conversation generally takes this pattern:-
Me: “How was school today?”
Him:  “Boring”.
Me: “Do anything interesting?”
Him: “Nope” as he disappears into his bedroom to change in preparation for adopting the lounging position in [...]

Don’t be fooled by texts

Exhilarated.  That’s the best word I can find to describe the boys when I collected them from Largs last Friday.   There I’d been, worrying all week that they might be hating it.  I should have known better.
We waved the others off in the minibus and then retired to Nardini’s - or the sad imitation of Nardini’s, all that [...]

The Glass Menagerie

My birthday is in January and this year, in celebration of my advancing years, we thought we’d go and play at being grown ups for an evening.  So we went to the theatre - and it’s not even the Festival!  Yes, we had to remind ourselves that there is theatre in Edinburgh outside the Festival.  I used to [...]

The art of communication

Text messages
Me:-  “How’s it going?”
GP1:- “awrite”
Me:- “Any wind for sails?”
GP1:- “some”
Me:- “Celtic 2 Rangers 1″
Silence.
I’d read between the lines if there were any to read between.  I just hope they won’t have been put off sailing for life!

All afloat

Mum, paranoid, needs text from boys, teenagers (gmt & vyt), afloat somewhere in the Clyde.  Maybe they’re too seasick to text.  Or too cold, wet and miserable.  More likely they’re having a great time and we’ll hear all about it at the weekend.  After they’ve had 24 hours sleep, that is.  I do wonder, though, if [...]

A hissy fit or the Secret Life of Chemistry Teachers

New Winton Village Hall, near Tranent, was the venue for a concert on Friday night, featuring local singer-songwriters Kim Edgar and Alex Hodgson - and, on the double bass,  Gareth, head of Chemistry at PL.    The hissy fit came from GP1 as we hadn’t consulted him in enough detail before buying tickets and he went swimming instead.  [...]

The best laid plans…

Wouldn’t it be nice if once, just once, life was boring and everything went according to schedule?  I could happily do boring for a while.
Whizzo scheme No. 1
The Plan
An Ocean Youth Trust trip for the boys.  What a great idea!  Time off school was negotiated, forms completed, money paid.  The boat is due to leave [...]

The Grand Mosque

It’s officially known as Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque.
Wow!
It may not be quite finished but it’s stunning.
Third largest in the world.  From Italy - the largest chandelier in the world.  From Iran - the largest handmade carpet in the world.  White marble from Greece.  In fact, about 200 different types of marble from around [...]

Guineapigmum goes running

So it’s done.  “Done” may be stretching the truth a little - “started” might be a better description.  The Great Edinburgh Run (5th May this year) has my entry fee and I’ve set up a fundraising page on JustGiving.   All I have to do now is go and do it.  Easy, eh?
I’ve decided to raise [...]

The Tesco internet shopping moment

Personally, I blame it all on GP2.  He wanted an apple.  We were heading, in the blinding  afternoon sun, temperature c. 400 C, towards the fruit and vegetable market at the time, so it didn’t seem an entirely unreasonable request.  However, I still think it was his fault.
But before that, let’s go back a year [...]
