GMDSS

Hah - I hope that made you look. GMDSS. An acronym that doesn’t have anything to do with teaching.  We finally made it to Port Edgar on Sunday morning for the course to upgrade our VHF User’s licence to this new brand of radio.  This was the course we forgot about when my father-in-law died in [...]

Giving up

I’m not too sure what’s started me off on this again.  Perhaps it’s that S1 reports are due home today and my 12yr old is contemplating what subjects he’s going to take next year.  Or perhaps it’s the continued mutterings in the media about such things as English 14yr olds giving up History and the country [...]

Current affairs

It’s a beautiful spring morning although cold and the pond is covered with a thick layer of ice.  The frog spawn doesn’t seem to mind, though.  I’ve just been hanging out the washing before settling down to what promises to be some frustrating and deadly data entry and had a quick check on the garden.

Showcase Concert

I know Alan has already posted about this but I thought I’d add my own “Thank you” to everyone involved.  It was fantastic!  Not a spare seat, so many pupils involved, great music.  And the wind band at the end made the most wonderful sound.  GP1 was somewhere in the brass section and, as we [...]

The nicest thing said to me this week

Last Saturday saw the swimming club championships, an annual event when our own swimmers race each other for medals and glory.  It’s always a very full on day, and this year was no exception.  It was non-stop from first thing in the morning when I was melting chocolate over food for the evening do to sometime during [...]

Happy birthday…

…to Mary, on Monday next.  St Joseph’s Day, in case anyone was wondering (hence Mary Jo).  Two days after St Patrick’s Day.  In our young days, we all used to go around on the 17th March with a damp green wilting blob of shamrock pinned on like a medal.   Does anyone still do that, I [...]

Pathways

We went in to the school this evening for the S1 Pathways evening - a sort of open evening where all the subjects try to sell themselves to potential Standard Grade students.  Now that we’ve been through this once, it didn’t seem quite as important as first time round and it was noticeable that there [...]

Choosing

I went in to the school yesterday (Thursday) for 14yr old’s meeting with his Guidance teacher to choose Highers.  The school’s letter of a couple of weeks back outlined the process in very general terms and said:-  “Pupils  take 5 subjects of their choice….  Maths and English are compulsory”.  With my own rudimentary grasp of English and Maths, I made that 7 [...]

Tales from the asylum

Drogothesaint is the latest addition to my blogroll.  Here’s a test for you:  as modern day teachers, how many of you would pick up that something was going badly wrong with one of your Higher students?

Scirus

I’ve just been trying out Scirus to look for publications for a literature review I’m working on.  David Gilmour told me about this search engine for scientific literature at the weekend, when we were both supporting our respective offspring at a badminton tournament.  Scirus produced some instant results for me, which I might never have ferreted [...]
