Congratulations to the team from Primary 6 who won the Dunbar cluster Europe quiz last week.  They travelled to Dunbar Grammar and competed against teams from Dunbar Primary, Stenton, Innerwick and West Barns and won by a convincing 9 points!

On Wednesday a team representing the Primary 7 class went to Torness Power Station for the finals of the Schools Engineering Challenge and came home with First Prize and a cheque for £550.  The whole class had researched wind turbines and made a working model of one from K’nex.  Their winning presentation included a song they had written and a fantastic display.  The display is at the front of the school - do come in and have a look.  Thanks to Miss Wallace and everyone who helped with this project - it was a real team effort.

Maths Roadshow stops at East Linton November 17, 2008

Pupils had the opportunity to try out a variety of problem solving maths puzzles at last week’s visiting Maths Roadshow.  It was a fun session for all - many heads being scratched to solve the trickier ones!  Pupil worked in pairs or individually and had a tracking sheet to mark down which challenges they had taken on.  P4 parent helpers provided valuable assistance throughout the morning session.  All participants received a certificate to acknowledge their participation.

Children in Need November 17, 2008

On Friday 14th November we hosted a variety of activities at school in aid of Children in Need. Pupils were encouraged to dress in spotty clothing and bring £1 donation in. There were some wacky and wonderful outfits and lots of handmade efforts which was very impressive.

Pupils were split into 9 groups across the year groups. They then spent the morning doing exciting and fun filled activities. There was aerobics, an assault course, face painting, Pudsey drive, designing Pudsey scarves, playing on the interactive whiteboards, a book stall, a giant Pudsey to cover in coppers, Pudsey bingo and badge making.  Wow - what a busy day!

Thank you to all the parent helpers, staff and pupils for making such a great effort for a good cause. The total raised has not been finalised but it is looking like it is around £500 !!!!!

Three Little Pigs November 5, 2008

Posted by elps in : Primary 3 , 4comments

Primary Three have been investigating materials and we used the idea from the story of the Three Little Pigs for an experiment.

In groups we made houses of straw, sticks and bricks (duplo). Then using a hairdryer (we thought it was safer than bringing in a real wolf) we huffed and puffed and watched the houses fall down. The house of straw fell down before we could take a photo of it, but the group making the house of straw cleverly used string and playdough to make it a bit stonger. Next up was the house of sticks. Our hairdryer was obviously not as powerful as the huff and puff of a wolf as our house of sticks stood firm for a while. However once we removed some of the playdough holding it together, it did tumble under the force of the hairdryer. Finally our houses of bricks all stood firm. We tried very hard to blow them down but they didn’t show any signs of breaking.

The whole class were excellent investigators, team players and builders - so well done Primary Three! Also Cameron was the camera man during our experiment, so congratulations for doing such a brilliant job.
