P7 Enterprise Activities December 12, 2007

Primary 7 have spent many weeks planning and organising a VE Day party to end their Environmental Studies topic WW2.

The classes have worked collaboratively across the year stage in committees such as food and drink; invitations; entertainment; hair and costume; decorations and games. The pupils wrote a ‘job application’ for the committee they wished to join and once the committees were formed they began to find out just how challenging organising a party for 100 can be! The venue and organisation committee oversaw the plans and communicated details to other groups.

The meticulous planning paid off and the VE Day party, on Thursday 22nd November was a great success. A representative from the Royal British Legion, Mr Porter (former DPS Head Teacher) and the ‘Flyright Dance Company‘ were some of the guests that the pupils had invited. The food was typical of the period and the food and drink committee did a great job ordering, pricing, taking delivery of and preparing the food. The Jitterbug dancing was a great hit and the party culminated with a sing song. The pupils put a great deal of effort into their costumes and if you happen to be passing down the P7 corridor there is a wall full of photographs of the prestigious event! Well done Primary 7!

Risk Factory Visit December 12, 2007

Primary 7 visited the ‘Risk Factory’ in Chesser, Edinburgh on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st November. The Risk Factory is Scotland’s first purpose built interactive safety centre. It is a ‘mock’ village built inside a warehouse with hands-on, real life settings as a context in which to deliver important safety messages to young people. The Primary 7 pupils found the scenarios very thought provoking and at times very powerful. We are trying not to give too much away incase we spoil it for next years’ Primary 7 pupils! Primary 7 are hoping to continue to build strong links with Africa through the work of Eric Foggit in Rwanda. Eric recently visited our classes to tell us more about children in a school where he has close connections. The P7 classes wrote letters to the children and Eric has taken them with him on his current visit to Rwanda in the hope that we might be able to set up communication with some of those children. We are all really excited about the prospect of having an African ‘pen pal’.

Cluster P7 Camp at Dounans, Aberfoyle December 12, 2007

P7 Camp was an outstanding success! The pupils experienced high challenges such as the Tree Climb, the Pole Climb and the Cat Walk as well as problem solving challenges like the Mohawk Walk and trust and teamwork challenges like the Night Line. They worked up quite an appetite and managed to dust off a cooked breakfast, hot lunch, dinner with dessert and hot chocolate and sandwiches before bed! The pupils were mixed in amongst the other cluster schools so that they had a chance to meet the rest of the future S1 2008/9. Many strong friendships were created as a result of camp and the experience was one which P7 say they will never forget!
