New York, New York……

Both of  our sons are heading off to Austrialia and New Zealand to play rugby this summer, before going on to university in the Autumn, so we have been looking for a family holiday before they set off.
The decision was sealed today and we’re off to New York next Thursday for a three night stay in [...]

No posts for over a week but life has been something of a blur.
I’m probably earning my corn at the moment with some major challenges facing us in relation to efficiency savings having to be made in the education budget.  Every meeting and piece of correspondence seems to be connected to this issue and I’ve got 100 [...]

My mother was 77 today.  She’s quite a character and I wondered what might be suitable present.  She’s been at me for some time to write a poem about her. I wrote one for my father after he died and in her inimitable fashion she told me that she wanted to hear hers.
So I sat [...]

On the treadmill….

Now I know men aren’t good at multi-tasking but over the last few days I’ve managed - for the first time - to be able to combine two things at once in a relatively productive manner.
As readers of this log will know I’d been off work earlier this month with a back injury. Exercise has [...]

Street Kids

We recently went to see Joan Eardley’s exhibition at the National Gallery for Scotland.  I loved her paintings of Street Kids- see below. It’s work [...]

Back to work

I get back to work tomorrow after nearly a fortnight off due a back injury. It’s been the longest period off work I’ve ever had - I think the previous record was a couple of days with flu (and not just man flu!)
On reflection I think I was quite lucky that when I fell I [...]

Stir Crazy

I’ve been shut in my study at home for the last week and it ain’t been fun.
Standing and walking have necessitated me bending at the hips like an old man to relieve the pressure.  When I spoke to the doctor at the beginning of the week she wanted to sign me off for two weeks [...]

Pain in the back….!

A week past Saturday we were leaving a friend’s house to go out for the evening (honest) when I slipped (new shoes) going down some steps and landed on on my back.  Luckily there were no bones broken but I’ve damaged some muscles in my lower back.
It must be something to do with being a man but I’ve been [...]

G’Day

Intellectual chat - (Mark Walker is in the centre of the photo)
I received an unexpected, yet very welcome, comment on my Log today from someone I’d met at Harvard in the summer (had I mentioned I’d been in Harvard?)
Mark Walker and I had I struck up a mutually abusive friendship during the course which our [...]

My son sits his Driving test tomorrow. Over the last few weeks he has devoured the Highway Code, viewed and reviewed every DVD ever produced about driving,  devised his own revision notes for his theory test, asked me to test him, pestered us for opportunities to drive, and (wonder of wonders) phoned up and organised his own driving [...]
