Keeping Bubbleshare-ised blogs loading quickly February 8, 2007

Bubbleshare Albums, such as those on the Pencaitland Primary Blog, are a great way to illustrate blog posts. But the blog can become slow to load if there are lots of Bubbleshare albums visible on the front page.

(If you’ve not tried this, activate the Bubbleshare plugin, then add a pointer to the album to your blog Posts - or Pages - like this: [bubbleshare*118790.b2ad07edbb5] (replace the * with a space) where the code part is album’s ID, easily visible from the URL.)

The reason for the slowdown is that each album contains a number of images, which visitors can play in-situ using a slide-show. To be able to play through the images, the embedded Bubbleshare player needs to load them all first. And if there are a lot of albums, that can be a lot of images. Even with a broadband connection, it’s not difficult to see how things can soon slow down.

Today we noticed that the Pencaitland blog was slow to load, and this was the reason. Luckily there’s an easy fix. All we did was go back through the older posts that were appearing towards the bottom of the blog’s front page, and used the “Split post with More” button to insert a Read More >> link before the Bubbleshare album. We left the more recent ones alone, so that the impact of the pictures wasn’t lost on the recent posts. (Split Post with More is the button that looks like two boxes, one above the other, with a dotted horizonal line in between - just to the right of the wee tree!)

That prevented quite a few Bubbleshare albums from older posts trying to appear on the front page. The blog in turn didn’t need to download all the images straight away, and the whole thing speeded up again. Sorted!

Hi David.
I have incurred problems with bubble share whist at work. Some machines in EL don’t have flash 8.
We have the option to download it, yet can’t without and administrator.
How do we get around this?

Tess/David
I have logged a request with IT to get this done. In the mean time I have been uploading some of my class’s graphics work. I don’t get the bubbles, mouths, hats etc but the rest is OK. Search using the tag “musselburgh” (not that I am particularly proud of most of them, but I hope that it may prompt them to try harder in future).
We have still to connect them with the department blog
Have a good weekend
R

Your hats etc are safe. We noticed that the in-post Bubbleshare Album plug-in doesn’t display speech bubbles, hats etc - but these are still visible on the original. If a visitor clicks on any picture, it will be opened up on Bubbleshare, and all these additions will be visible.
