Health Week begins… March 5, 2007

Our school health week began today. From experience with my own children, girls in particular, seem increasingly reluctant to embrace fitness and exercise as they get older. In my view it is therefore crucial that we involve and encourage all children from an early stage so that they view health as ‘fun’. After our opening healthy assembly I led the class in a dance (and I use the term loosely) session to songs such as “The Cha Cha Slide”, “YMCA” and “The Way To Amarillo”. They seemed to have great fun trying to copy my version of the recognised moves!
Moving outside the school, Alistair from the Outdoor Education department, organised the children in a variety of problem solving games and orienteering. While it was a bit chilly the rain kept off - and anyway, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. After lunch we had a demonstration on how to wash our hands properly and finished the day looking at our emotional health and promoting self-esteem in our classroom.
It was a really enjoyable day for myself as it made a distinct change from my “standard” day. While we should be promoting health as an ongoing message I believe an event such as our health week certainly raises the profile of health with the children and this can only be a good thing.

However I am keen to try and theme my whole weeks programme around Health to make it more memorable for the children. While I think I have enough to cover physical activities and healthy eating I am aware I do not have much yet that concentrates on mental health or emotional health. If you have any ideas of activities on these topics that are suitable for a P3 class then they would be gratefully received.
