Higher Mathematics 2003 Past Paper Help
Published March 16th, 2007 in 5M1, Higher, Past Paper QuestionsPost your problem here and hopefully someone will get back to you quite quickly. State the question that is giving you trouble and what you’ve tried so far.
Happy revising.
Hey, just a few questions from paper 1 i was wondering if i could get help on.Firstly for some reason i can`t do q 4.(a), managed (b) using answers though. Secondly i have no idea how to do question 10, i tried using tan pheta =m but i didn`t no if it was going anywhere. Finally 11(b) caused me some problems.
Pixie
Hi Pixie.
4A Remember a recurrence relation tells you the next term in a sequence if you know the previous one. U1 = pU0 + q so 15 = 12p + q do the same with u1 and u2 and you’ll have some simultaneous equations to solve.
10 You have a right angled triangle in the diagram. opposite = 4 adjacent = 8. Use pythagoras to work out the hypotenuse then you can get exact values for sin p and cos p. Expand sin (2p) and cos (2p) using compound angle formulae and substitute in what you got earlier. Use these in part b
11b If you look at the diagram q can be deduced from the x coordinate of the centre of circle B. You can then use the coordinates of A to calculate p ie substitue x and y into the equation of the parabola.
Hope this helps. I’ll check again around 10pm
Cheers Mr.S just 1 question about the answers. For 11(b) why does q=-24 and not +24?
I have also just finished the non-calc for 2002 and have come across a couple of small obstacles. These are qs. 5, 10 and 11. I feel guilty asking for so much help. People might say I`m being greedy he he.
Pixie
Just realised I probably should have posted that in the 2002 link.
hello. i realise i may be a little late on replying…q5 requires u to use the compound angle formulae (given at the front of the paper) to write sin(a + b) in terms of sin(a), sin(b), cos(a) and cos(b) …once you have done that you just put your values in that u get from the triangles. Then it’s just a case of simplifying it down.
hopefully that makes some sense?! will post rest in a min.

q10 is just a case of differentiating the function. to do this, multiply by the power and the derivative of the thing in the bracket then minus 1 from the power.
Part b is just a case of getting the derivative, that you just worked out, to look like the function in the integral (by multiplying or dividing by something) - then this tells you what you have to multiply/divide the original function by ..giving the solution to the integral. PS DON’T for get the +C :D.
Appologies for the dodgey explanation, its late lol.
sj
not 100% sure how to do q11 - but im not sure if you have covered it yet?! - we didnt do it ’til just before the final last year.
sj
Hi Guys. Too late for me I’m afraid. Thanks for your help Steve-0. I hope it helped pixie. Steve-o is quite right we havve not covered q11 yet so don’t worry.
Mr S.
he he cheers Steve-O went to bed just before you posted that ( you know early to bed early to rise and all that) but I`ll try them at the weekend and concentrate on calculator tonight. cheers guys.
Pixie
i’m having trouble with 11.b) on the calc paper about the intersection of logs. not sure where to start…any help appreciated thanks =]
ahahaha i just realised that if you look at the anwers then it tells u how. i am SUCH an idiot…
On question 9, 2003 calc, I’m getting an answer out of the calculating quadratics equation that i can’t use cos-1 on and the other answer I’m getting out I don’t know what to do with, anyone get this or am I going about this question wrong?
Girv
I’m glad you sorted it out. Be careful not log too early. See what you can do with powers at the start before logging. After all it is a last question!!!!!
Hi Gav. I’m not sure hat you are talking about when you mention the quadratic equation! Here’s how I attempted Q9 paper 2 2003
a.(a+b) = a.a + a.b
so
a.a + a.b = 36
a.a = |a||a| cos 0 = |a||a|
thus
Solving this gives you your answer.
If I am talking about the wrong question please post back.
Hi! can someone show me how to do question 8 paper 2003 calc, please.
Thanx in advance!
Faisal Sattar
Q 8 is about optimisation(finding max and min tps). Think about dy/dx=0 for stat pts and use the nature table to get the shape of the graph.
good luck
altough i can do question 8 2003 any chance of any1 telling me how to do Q 8 2003 paper 1? and also paper 2 2003 Q’s 4,6 and 10
question 8 on paper one…u mean the integrating one? you just bring it up so its the integral of (3x+1)^-1/2 if u can read that ok (the powers negative a half). then u just use chain rule for integration.
question 4 u just differentaiate and put x=1 into it to get your gradient, then find the co-ordinate by putting x=1 back into original equation. then its just a ase of y-b=m(x-a). for part b) u substiute the equation of ur straight line into all the y values of the circle equation and then do discriminant.
for 6 u differntiate them using the formulae list and then just put pi over 6 into it.
10 use cos(2x)=2cos squared x -1 and then put into two brackets like a quadratic i think, then solve.
TADA! that better have helped u and u better have needed it otherwise that was such a waste of time for me. ohwell.
now how the heck do u do q12 paper 1 with the logs? im confused by the form it has to be in….
Hi Kirsty Andrew and Faisal. It looks like Kirsty helped Andrew and Andrew helped Faisal. If any of you want me to elaborate further please post back. Now Kirsty no-one has helped you. Don’t worry I will.
Remember that
Do the same with the second part of the expression and the answer should become apparent. Hopefully this is useful to you. If you require further help please post back.
ohhhhhhhhhhh i see. makes sense! thanks a lot mr.s, you’re a doll. haha…
Glad I was of some assistance Girv. I hope your revision is coming to an end soon. A good nights sleep will do you more good than sitting up late revising remember. By the sounds of it you’re in good shape anyway.
Hey…
Going back to Q8 Paper1,…
I get this: (3x+1)^-1/2
But then when I carry out the integration I get it wrong!
Can someone show me the next step please?
Thanks!
Hi Christo. I reckon you’re forgetting to multiply the numerator by the coefficient of x from inside the brackets. For instance if you were to integrate the following:
then your answer would look like this:
Hope this helps
Thanx for all the help!
Paper 1 today was pretty okay, but paper 2 was a killer. lol even our maths teacher sed it was hard!
How did everyones else’s exam go?
Hey Faisal. Glad you did well in P1. Everyone I spoke to said much the same as yourself at my school. I’ve not had time to do the papers as I’ve been out all day doing problem solving with S1’s and then had a parents night. My first impressions were that the papers were balanced over both papers. My wife’s class at Ross High School also found P2 hard so it must a be a general trend as that’s at least 4 school groups saying the same thing (Cristo has just posted a comment saying the same thing. Forget it now. You can’t change the result anymore. Onwards and upwards with the rest of your exams. Good luck. Mr S
why is higher tier maths so hard and why have they stopped doing intermediate this year not fair
hey, i don’t know how do do Q12 on Paper 1 2003. any chance of some help?
i am currently stuck on 2003 paper 2 Q10, i have tried using the angle formulas but still cannot work out the answer.if u could help that would be great. thanksx
