Hey
I got a weird answer for the first question when it asks the coordinates of D, I got the point as (21/5 , -27/5) which isn’t on line BC. I must of gone wrong somewhere. Anybody got any ideas what I have done???
Hi Oli.
Without seeing what you’ve done it’s hard to say. I’d be one for trying again. Have you downloaded Geogebra yet? If so plot the coordinates of your points and maybe looking at an accurate diagram will help you see the whole picture. If not give me 5mins and a post will appear here with a link to geogebra’s download page.
For BC you’ll have to find the gradient of the line then use y - b = m(x - a) to get the equation.
For the line passing through point A you are given the coordinates of A and the gradient of the line. Again use
y-b=m(x-a).
Solve simultaneously to find where they cross. I would use substitution rather than elimination to solve the system.
If this doesn’t help comment back and i’ll help you more.
Mr S.
have you double checked your equations for the lines AD and BC ?
beat me to it mr s
As they say fastest finger first. I’m going offline for a couple of hours now so It’s good to know that others are around helping out. I’m sure oli’s just as grateful as I am. Thanks Steve-o
Even my father said that some of these were tricky.
It didn’t stop him explaining the solutions faster than I could pick up on though.
I’ll start this tonight.
Oh, hi Finlay.
i don’t know where to start with q4. any ideas?
yeah me neither… i reckon its gonna be using the discriminant but theres ks in there which just confuses me!!!!
You’re on the right track Laura. The discriminant will end up being a function of k, which you can work with.
What is question 6 asking? and I think theres a misprint when it says “are rational are real”
On q4, equal roots means one root like [tex]b^2 - 4ac = 0 [/text]
Sorry, got that Latex thing wrong, Mr Stebbing’ll probably show this in class aswell.
The LaTeX plugin isn’t installed yet I’m afraid!
Ok cool, il try that Mr S, i used the y-b=m(x-a) formula then solved the two equations but will give it another shot. Thanks
Remember Oli. If you are sure you’ve used the correct methods to do the question, you will get most of the marks. It may be better to move onto another question and come back later in an examination. Silly arithmetical mistakes are often hard to find. If I know there is a mistake and have the time i generally start again. You won’t have that luxury in an exam. Move on and come back is the best advice I can give you.
i couldnt draw my graph for Q3 coz the root (-1,0) was weird as my point of inflexion is (-1/3,100/27) so it would have to come back down but there’s only two stationary points. have i gone wrong somewhere? or am i being stupid…very possible…
Hi Girv. Sorry I didn’t get back to you last night. My wife and I went to James bond. (it was fantastic. I thoroughly rewcommend it.) Back to the important stuff. Your coordinates look fine for your turning point, however, I got a max t.p at (-1/3,100/27) I’d check your nature table. have you got a row for 2, 3x+1 , x-2 like below?
………………….-> -1/3 -> 2 ->

I forgot to say Girv. Try Geogebra. You’ll be able to draw the sketch and hopefully decide where you went wrong. Obviously you won’t have a computer in an exam but you know you’ll get partial credit for what you do in an exam.
aaaaaaaaaaah i see. that makes a lot more sense! thanks. also. whilst you’re here, did i miss anything important on friday? and thats nice…i’ve not seen it yet…
Hi Girv. We went over revision sheet 1. The solutions are posted on the blog. You’ll enjoy it when you go and see it by the way. Don’t worry when you see James in a Ford Focus. His next 2 cars are fabby
Yeah I got a stupid coordinate for number 1 too. Geogebra’s telling me it’s wrong, but I can’t work it out for myself. Therefore I can’t do the parts of that question after.
Oh well.
Hi Fraser. Try using Geogebra to draw a good diagram for the question. Then use perpenduicular/midpoint/intersection tools to produce what you’ve to do in the question. Hopefully by using these tools you’ll understand what workings you have to do in order to solve the question. If you still don’t get any further I’ll post a more detailed help tick list for you to get it right
for q6 i have used the discriminant with the hope of getting a square number to show that the roots are rational. i ended up with 4(q^2+r^2+9p^2-2qr). is this a square number and how do i factorise it?
Well Becky. If you reaarange what you’ve got to this : 4(q^2 - 2qr + r^2 + 9p^2) you can maybe do something with the first three terms in the brackets. If you still can’t get it comment back and I’ll complete it for you.
