P6/7 Art Workshop

P6/7 have been participating in a Visual Arts Scotland workshop this week with artist Hazel Vellacott. On Monday we visited the VAS Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. Hazel and another artist, Liza Green, showed us around the exhibition. We thought about what may have been the inspiration behind some of the pieces of art and then we did sketches of those we particularly liked. On Wednesday, Hazel, along with East Lothian artist Alison Burt, came to school and showed us how to do a technique called monoprinting. We had great fun filling our sketch books with prints.

P6/7 Sports Hall For All Project

P6/7 have been working with Sandra King, our community development officer, to build a 3D model of our school, its grounds and the surrounding area. The model is going to be used as part of the Sports Hall For All project, as the school grounds are one of three proposed possible sites for a new sports centre. Models of all of the sites will be displayed at the Family Fun Event at Port Seton Centre on Saturday 20th March where local residents will have the opportunity to share their ideas.

P6M & P6/7 Visit to Power Station

On Wednesday 17th March P6M will visit Cockenzie Power Station as part of their topic of this block, Electricity. In the afternoon P6/7 will go on the same trip. The class have been busy building electrical circuits, both series and parallel, in which they have made bulbs light, buzzers sound and motors move. They have also been working together in small groups to build a model and then wire it up to include an electric circuit. Pictures of the finished product to follow……………………………………

P5 Hillwalking

P5 are going hillwalking with Outdoor Education staff to the hills around the Hopes Reservoir. The first group will go on the16th , the next group on the 17th and then on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of March. A member of school staff will go with them too so we better get our boots cleaned and ready.

P5/6 Doctors Surgery

Class P5/6 have made a role play doctor’s surgery in their classroom. They have real x-rays, plater casts and medical scrubs for their surgery and are really enjoying active play in this area. Many thanks to Mrs Stewart for all the supplies.

P6/7 Fair Trade Afternoon Tea

P6/7’s Fair Trade afternoon tea was a great success. Over fifty guests enjoyed our homebaking, made with Fair Trade products wherever possible, washed down with Fair Trade tea and coffee. The aim of our tea was to raise awareness of Fair Trade products and to encourage people to buy Fair Trade. Many of our guests successfully completed a Fair Trade quiz to show what they had learned from our information displays and slideshow, and have promised to switch one item to a Fair Trade brand next time they shop. As we are working towards achieving the Fair Trade Schools Award we will be continuing to hold Fair Trade events throughout the year.

P1M visit

P1M is planning a trip to Edinburgh on Monday 22nd March. They will visit the National Museum and the Art Gallery. More information home soon.

Tree Planting

The children of Cockenzie nursery and primary helped the community council plant trees in the school grounds. They watched as the digger dug the large holes and the community council lifted the trees into them. The children then helped put the soil back into the ground.
