Wonderful Words / Palabras Marvillosas

Since Monday this week we have been visiting the Dictionary.com website to see their word of the week. We have set up a Wonderful Words Wall and will soon be filling it with all the great nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and onomatopoaic words like SQUISH! (A Miss Collins favourite).

We have also been learning a bit of Spanish as the website, being American, has a Spanish word of the day too! Que bien!

Roll Up! Roll Up! It’s the greatest EU Tourism Fair in town!

We held our EU Open Day yesterday and had a fantastic turn out! Our classrooms were transformed into an EU Tourism Fair with everyone pitching their country as the one to visit at individual stands. It was a bit manic trying to get all our posters, flyers, leaflets, flags and props ready on time (I did admit to being a bit stressed out), but WE DID IT!

Thirty children and one teacher is a bit of a squeeze in our classroom… so with another 20 or so adults at a time it was a packed-out event! Parents were challenged by our EU Open Day quiz with questions on all the countries that were represented. The questions weere all very different and all a bit special as very few of the parents could answer them without visiting the stand… which is what we wanted :)

Well done everyone! :)

A Special Gift

Last year P5 classes took part in a Scottish food standard agency project in conjunction with Scottish Rugby Union. It involved a 6 week rugby coaching slot and in class children worked through a healthy eating workbook. It covered health and safety with food and what to eat and when it was safe to do so.

Last week we were presented with a signed photo of the Scottish Rugby team for our involvement in the project by Craig McGeary, the Musselburgh Rugby Club Development Officer!

Tag Rugby

On the first week back after the October break our Tag Rugby sessions began. We enjoyed lots of drills and exercises in the warmth of the gym hall:

This week we were training out at Olivebank. It was very sunny, but it wasn’t quite as warm as the gym hall…. OK, let’s be honest… it was FREEZING, but as long as everyone kept moving it was fine!

EU Home Learning Task

P6b are a very, very creative bunch, and this was demonstrated with the huge variety of high quality songs, tunes and raps that came out of our EU ‘Write An Anthem’ task. There is now a page on this blog dedicated to it where you can see some mobile phone video clips!

Design Task for Home Learning

Since September a craze has swept through P6… Tech Decks. The pupils will no doubt explain what they are better than me, but they are mini-skateboards that you can make do tricks using your fingers. Every one has a different design, and so we decided to create our own versions.

The designs had to express your own identity somehow, and everyone had to present their design to the class explaining why they had included certain design features or colours.

The results were all totally unique, as requested, and very colourful! They are now displayed in the classroom:

A New Look!

I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday? I see some of you have been visiting the site which is great :) I am trying to get some slideshows from our EU and Anti-Bullying work on here, but it is taking AGES!

In the meantime I thought our blog was a bit hard to read so I’ve tried this new look.

Let me know what you think folks! :)

Anti-Bullying Project

We have joined forces this week with P4b to launch a very special Anti-Bullying Project. This year National Anti-Bullying Week runs from 17 - 23 November, and to mark this year’s event, the respectme website and the Scottish Government have set up an anti-bullying competition, based around the theme, ‘what bullying means to me’.

We only had two afternoons to get our entries done, so we designed posters on this theme. Each member of our class was given a P4 partner and we split up between our two classrooms. We began by brainstorming what type of actions were bullying and then talked about how those actions made the victem feel on the inside. There were lots of very good ideas and children also shared some very good advice about how to deal with bullying.

The theme ‘What Bullying Means to Me’ is quite tricky to put into a poster, but everyone had very good ideas and made a start to their plans on Wednesday.

On Thursday we only had 1 hour to get the posters finished! There was a huge variety of paper, sequins, ribbon, card, paint and pens used, and everyone really enjoyed working with someone new on this creative task.

There are lots and lots of great pictures from our work over the two days, and when I have time I will add them as a slideshow!

Well done everyone!

Listening to Learn - Learning to Listen

This week we are focusing on listening to people in conversation. We came up with a good set of guidelines about what a good listener does in conversations:

  • Don’t interrupt
  • Don’t change the subject
  • Don’t look around or at watch
  • Look interested
  • Look at the person while they are talking
  • Ask questions to show you are interested, and answer their questions too.

We then practiced this by sitting in talking partners and describing a special event or competition that they had been to or part of. We gave each other feedback about how well we had listened.
