Happy St Andrew’s Day from P6b!

We have been celebrating St Andrew’s day all morning with a Brain Booster, a table research task, art and some singing!

We had until 9am to name as many famous Scots as possible, and then we worked as table against the clock. Using the supplements from the Daily Mirror that Alison had brought in, each table had five minutes to read and learn as much as they could about History, Inventors, Explorers, Art & Literature and Science & Medicine to share with the rest of the class. We then each picked one person to do a portrait of. And in singing practice we all sang Call It Alba with the other P6s and the P5s -It sounded great! :)

A Historic Day

On November 5th we found out a little about why Barack Obama’s election to the White House was so important. We looked at a slideshow of photographs of the Civil Rights movement and of important figures like Jesse Jackkson and Martin Luther King Jr. We also listened to Martin Luther King Jr’s famous “I have a dream..” speech on the internet.
We have a very interesting discussion about what we knew about this issue.

Wonderful Words / Palabras Marvillosas

Since Monday this week we have been visiting the Dictionary.com website to see their word of the week. We have set up a Wonderful Words Wall and will soon be filling it with all the great nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and onomatopoaic words like SQUISH! (A Miss Collins favourite).

We have also been learning a bit of Spanish as the website, being American, has a Spanish word of the day too! Que bien!

Roll Up! Roll Up! It’s the greatest EU Tourism Fair in town!

We held our EU Open Day yesterday and had a fantastic turn out! Our classrooms were transformed into an EU Tourism Fair with everyone pitching their country as the one to visit at individual stands. It was a bit manic trying to get all our posters, flyers, leaflets, flags and props ready on time (I did admit to being a bit stressed out), but WE DID IT!

Thirty children and one teacher is a bit of a squeeze in our classroom… so with another 20 or so adults at a time it was a packed-out event! Parents were challenged by our EU Open Day quiz with questions on all the countries that were represented. The questions weere all very different and all a bit special as very few of the parents could answer them without visiting the stand… which is what we wanted :)

Well done everyone! :)

A Special Gift

Last year P5 classes took part in a Scottish food standard agency project in conjunction with Scottish Rugby Union. It involved a 6 week rugby coaching slot and in class children worked through a healthy eating workbook. It covered health and safety with food and what to eat and when it was safe to do so.

Last week we were presented with a signed photo of the Scottish Rugby team for our involvement in the project by Craig McGeary, the Musselburgh Rugby Club Development Officer!

Tag Rugby

On the first week back after the October break our Tag Rugby sessions began. We enjoyed lots of drills and exercises in the warmth of the gym hall:

This week we were training out at Olivebank. It was very sunny, but it wasn’t quite as warm as the gym hall…. OK, let’s be honest… it was FREEZING, but as long as everyone kept moving it was fine!

EU Home Learning Task

P6b are a very, very creative bunch, and this was demonstrated with the huge variety of high quality songs, tunes and raps that came out of our EU ‘Write An Anthem’ task. There is now a page on this blog dedicated to it where you can see some mobile phone video clips!
