P7 Bake Sale January 22, 2009

On Tuesday 20th January the P7s had a bake sale to raise money for our charity, The Make A Wish Foundation.
We started off a couple of days in advance drawing flyers and posters to be put up round the school. Then on Monday everyone went home and made a scrumptious piece of homemade baking each.
Each house took it in turns to run the stalls and as each class came down to the sale, more and more of the delicious looking cakes dissappeared from the plates.
The bigger pieces of baking were priced at 30p, most of the cupcakes were 20p and the smaller things were 10p.
We raised a total of £195.40. Fantastic and thank you all!

Pre-Vocal Opera Training January 16, 2009

On Monday the 12th of January P7 had there first visit from Scottish Opera. We had a trained opera specialist in to help us with Pre- show rehearsals and his name was Rodger. He started by having a little listen to how well we knew the songs that we had been practising for weeks on end. He seemed to be very pleased with how well we new the songs. He gave us some tips for holding long notes and working on volume but over all he was very pleased with our effort and progress. Then he worked through the songs as they will come in our big performance as he did each song he also played the piano , which we had to sing above this made it extremely hard. He also told us that we would be acting as well so we had to work really hard to memorise the lyrics so we didn’t have a mind blank on the big day. We will be having another visit from Scottish Opera on the 26th of January for our final rehearsal and then we will have our big performance later that afternoon . P7 pupils have been given 1 ticket per pupil so we hope to see mums, dads friends and family at the P7 performance of The sand of time. In April all of the schools in the Musselburgh cluster will be meeting at Musselburgh Grammar for an even bigger performance in font of each other and on the big stage. We hope to see that every child has someone there to support our hard work. Thanks, From Sarah Brown & Jenna McDonald P7B.

How do you measure dew point and relative humidity? December 8, 2008

Posted by campiep67 in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so far

On Monday the 1st of December we were all put into groups and were given an experiment to perform and then explain how it worked to the class.  Some of us were given a psychrometer to measure relative humidity and others were given a Dew Point experiment.

Relative Humidity Experiment :

The psychrometer needed :

a box, two thermometers, two elastic bands, a cotton shoelace, scissors, a smaller box and water.

If nessecary    bo the shoelace for a few minutes to get rid of most if not all the chemicals.

1. Wrap one end of the shoelace around the bulb on one of the thermometers and this makes it the wet bulb thermometer.

2. Mount the “wet bulb” thermometer on the psychrometer stand (box). Push the loose end of the shoelace through a hole to the inside of the box. Place the end in a smaller container filled with water and make sure it’s checked regularly to make sure the shoelace is still soaking in the water.

3. Mount a second thermometer next to the wet bulb thermometer and this now stays the “Dry Bulb” thermometer.

4. Locate the psychrometer in the shade out of the wind. Before reading the “wet bulb” thermometer fan it for about a minute to take full advantage of the cooling effect.

5. We used a graph to find the precise relative humidity.

6. We compared our readings with the official ones.

Dew Point Experiment :

You will need :

a can , a thermometer , a spoon , ice , water in a container , paper , a pencil

1.      Let a container of water sit for a couple of hours.

2.      Use a thermometer to measure the air temperature (always take reading in the shade)

3.      Fill a can almost completely with the room temperature water. Place the thermometer in the water and hold it against the side of the can to get the temperature of the can

4.      Put some ice in to the water. Stir the mixture.

5.      the dew point is the temperature registered on the thermometer when the first sign of moisture begin’s to appear on the outside surface of the can. As the can cools more and more water will condense on the outside surface the thin layer of air around the can has been cooled to it’s saturation point.

6.      If the air temperature is near the dew point dew or fog is likely to appear.

If the air temperature and the dew point are far apart the air is dry and the humidity is low.
