As part of our Woodlands topic we were looking at ancient trees. As a class we decided on a key question which ended up being: Are There Any Ancient Trees at Campie? We also played a true or false game to find out how trees grow best. After that we read “Measuring the Girth of a Tree” leaflet supplied by Woodland Trust. It said that we had to measure 1.5m up the tree and then measure around it at that height. If the tree is slanted then measure 1.5m up from the tree side nearest to the ground. We decided on groups and went and got our materials: A Measuring tape, pencil, clipboard and a data recording sheet. When we went outside measured the trees and came back in, we divided the girth by 2.5 because that is how much a tree grows a year. After we did this,we put together a scientific report and we found out that there are no ancient trees around Campie but some quite old ones.

After reading your summaries (see class activities), it is hard to believe how much you have all accomplished this year. First term was interesting as we wrote to our Canadian penpals in Kugluktuk, made inuksuks and visited the Risk Factory. Winter term was certainly busy during our WW2 topic, with trips, interviews and integrating the new PSPs into our learning. The River Study was lots of fun with Mrs. Stark as was the Guitar Hero transition project. The songs were great, thanks to Steven, and the videos turned out looking quite professional and all were original. It has been a very positive year and everyone should be proud of what they have accomplished; being more confident, improved behaviour, working with new technology, being creative, expressing yourselves in groups and representing the class and school, on trips and when speaking to visitors. Well done and keep up the good work.

Thank you all for the thoughtful responses regarding your novellas (see class activities page). I think you all have given feedback that is reflective of how your group worked together and any changes you made during the writing process. It seems everyone enjoyed our Writing Groups and felt that discussing ideas with each other was beneficial as you could could help one another. Also, the Crazy Talk images are very effective and look fantastic!
