What a miserable day of weather we had for our Autumn Watch, but despite the cold and wet the children had a good time. We looked at berries and funghi and played a parachute game. Challenge and outdoor learning (in all weathers) is a big part of what we are trying to do in P2. This visit had a good mix of both. Thanks to the Ranger and parents who helped with this trip. We have a winter watch in December - hope the weather is more kind!

Today P7 and P6/7 walked to Newhailes to take part in a Woodlands Outdoor Day which involved shelter building and survival skills, identifying funghi and woodland art. With the woodland art we also did digital photography. During the shelter building we had to get into groups and decided on the most important things you would need in a shelter to survive in the woods. Then we marked our area to build our dens and began gathering dead branches and materials to build it. After that, we acted as estate agents to describe why our dens were the best! Some of us had lunch in our shelters.
Our groups used parachute games to learn about funghi and searched for mushrooms and other funghi in the wood. Mrs. Baillie led our art group and we used natural materials for our artwork and we practised our photography skills taking digital pictures of nature. A very good day overall though we were quite cold!

Looking back, it was certainly a challenging week at Lagganlia (and not just for the children, either!). There were many new and exciting activities in which to participate, as you have seen from our photos and posts, but also having to overcome fears. It is quite a challenge in itself setting out for a full day of rock climbing or hillwalking, for example, or looking up the white water of a fast-flowing gorge and realising the high expectations that are set for you at Lagganlia. As it wasn’t just a case of rising to the challenge yourself, but more importantly, how did you help the rest of the group reach their goals? One of the many enlightening stories from the days out came back from a teacher who said her group made up songs and sang together on the very long walk up the mountain. Aside from the physical challenges, the pupils organised and managed themselves for the week in terms of preparing lunches for the day and following the instructors’ direction. Evening activities were exciting, including Capoiera and Circus Skills as we learned even more about stretching ourselves and lot about working together!

Everyone is currently stripping their beds and packing their bags - i’m just about to go and do a room inspection, I will probably need a face mask and gloves, but you never know. Anyway thanks to all of you have looked at the website and commented, I have tried to pass on your messages, however I have had to rely on memory as we dont have a printer or big screen here. After the holidays we will display more photos.
