Autumn Watch at Newhailes - P2 November 14, 2008
Posted by Steve Wood in : P2, Uncategorized , add a commentWhat a miserable day of weather we had for our Autumn Watch, but despite the cold and wet the children had a good time. We looked at berries and funghi and played a parachute game. Challenge and outdoor learning (in all weathers) is a big part of what we are trying to do in P2. This visit had a good mix of both. Thanks to the Ranger and parents who helped with this trip. We have a winter watch in December - hope the weather is more kind!
P7 Newhailes Outdoor Day October 28, 2008
Posted by Alicia MacFarlane in : Uncategorized , 4commentsToday P7 and P6/7 walked to Newhailes to take part in a Woodlands Outdoor Day which involved shelter building and survival skills, identifying funghi and woodland art. With the woodland art we also did digital photography. During the shelter building we had to get into groups and decided on the most important things you would need in a shelter to survive in the woods. Then we marked our area to build our dens and began gathering dead branches and materials to build it. After that, we acted as estate agents to describe why our dens were the best! Some of us had lunch in our shelters.
Our groups used parachute games to learn about funghi and searched for mushrooms and other funghi in the wood. Mrs. Baillie led our art group and we used natural materials for our artwork and we practised our photography skills taking digital pictures of nature. A very good day overall though we were quite cold!

Rise to the Challenge! October 17, 2008
Posted by Alicia MacFarlane in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so farLooking back, it was certainly a challenging week at Lagganlia (and not just for the children, either!). There were many new and exciting activities in which to participate, as you have seen from our photos and posts, but also having to overcome fears. It is quite a challenge in itself setting out for a full day of rock climbing or hillwalking, for example, or looking up the white water of a fast-flowing gorge and realising the high expectations that are set for you at Lagganlia. As it wasn’t just a case of rising to the challenge yourself, but more importantly, how did you help the rest of the group reach their goals? One of the many enlightening stories from the days out came back from a teacher who said her group made up songs and sang together on the very long walk up the mountain. Aside from the physical challenges, the pupils organised and managed themselves for the week in terms of preparing lunches for the day and following the instructors’ direction. Evening activities were exciting, including Capoiera and Circus Skills as we learned even more about stretching ourselves and lot about working together!
We are coming home October 10, 2008
Posted by Steve Wood in : Uncategorized , 2commentsIn 45 minutes we will be on the road back to Musselburgh. What a great week we have had. Most of us are walking around like zombies as we are all so tired. Everyone is currently stripping their beds and packing their bags - i’m just about to go and do a room inspection, I will probably need a face mask and gloves, but you never know. Anyway thanks to all of you have looked at the website and commented, I have tried to pass on your messages, however I have had to rely on memory as we dont have a printer or big screen here. After the holidays we will display more photos.
See you soon

Anti Bullying Competition Work October 7, 2008
Posted by Miss Collins in : P4, P6, Uncategorized , 1 comment so farToday saw the start of a beautiful friendship between P4b and P6b! Our classes came together to start work on the theme of bullying.
National Anti-Bullying Week 2008 is 17 - 23 November, and the website respectme and the Scottish Government have joined forces to launch an anti-bullying competition, based around the theme, ‘what bullying means to me’.
The children from P4 and P6 have started working on entries for this competition today. Each P4 is working with a P6 partner, and we started by sharing ideas about what forms bullying can take. The poster that the P6s designed last year came in really handy as it gave us the categories of Physical, Verbal, Emotional and Cyberbullying. We also discussed how these types of bullying make a person feel inside. This helped us to brainstorm ideas for what bullying means to us, and then how we can show that in a poster for the competition.
Listening to Learn - Learning to Listen October 7, 2008
Posted by Miss Collins in : Uncategorized , add a commentIn Campie this year we are all working on our listening skills, as you will have seen from the wonderful leaflets that the children designed and sent home. The whole school is involved and will be learning to listen in different ways all year.
For example, P6b have been focusing on listening to people in conversation. We came up with guidelines for good listening in conversations and practiced them in talking partners.
P3 Golden Challenge Day September 23, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3, Uncategorized , 3commentsWe had an interesting Golden Challenge day in Primary Three. We all began our day with a physical challenge that involved doing as many star jumps, hops on the left foot and then the right foot and bunny hops as we could in 30 seconds. It was much harder than it sounds!! We had to note how many we managed in each category and then in the afternoon our challenge was to beat our own record.
Each teacher prepared a different challenge and the three classes went round each challenge.
- Challenge 1 - the dessert challenge - was to work collaboratively to design a special birthday dessert. The children had to work in groups of 3, 4 or 5 ensuring that their new dessert included at least one ingredient from everyone’s favourite dessert. They then had to make a collage of the new dessert with everyone making a part of it.
- Challenge 2 - the story telling challenge- also involved working in a group. Each group was given several props or visual aids. They then had to use these to develop a story and then tell the story to the other groups. This was very tricky as some children were shy about talking in front of an audience but the rest of the group tried hard to lend their support and encouragement.
- Challenge 3 - the decision making challenge - was to make joint decisions about resources needed for a variety of projects. Children had to give opinions and justify their positions in order to come to a consensus. This was a challenge which taught the children a lot about working together.
We ended the day with some singing. We chose to sing the Fischy Music song “Why?” and we talked about some of the difficult questions it raised. We came to the conclusion that there can be more than one answer to a problem and that some questions are very difficult to answer. We really enjoyed challenging ourselves and we are looking forward to many more challenges in the year ahead.
