P3 Golden Challenge Day September 23, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3, Uncategorized , 3commentsWe had an interesting Golden Challenge day in Primary Three. We all began our day with a physical challenge that involved doing as many star jumps, hops on the left foot and then the right foot and bunny hops as we could in 30 seconds. It was much harder than it sounds!! We had to note how many we managed in each category and then in the afternoon our challenge was to beat our own record.
Each teacher prepared a different challenge and the three classes went round each challenge.
- Challenge 1 - the dessert challenge - was to work collaboratively to design a special birthday dessert. The children had to work in groups of 3, 4 or 5 ensuring that their new dessert included at least one ingredient from everyone’s favourite dessert. They then had to make a collage of the new dessert with everyone making a part of it.
- Challenge 2 - the story telling challenge- also involved working in a group. Each group was given several props or visual aids. They then had to use these to develop a story and then tell the story to the other groups. This was very tricky as some children were shy about talking in front of an audience but the rest of the group tried hard to lend their support and encouragement.
- Challenge 3 - the decision making challenge - was to make joint decisions about resources needed for a variety of projects. Children had to give opinions and justify their positions in order to come to a consensus. This was a challenge which taught the children a lot about working together.
We ended the day with some singing. We chose to sing the Fischy Music song “Why?” and we talked about some of the difficult questions it raised. We came to the conclusion that there can be more than one answer to a problem and that some questions are very difficult to answer. We really enjoyed challenging ourselves and we are looking forward to many more challenges in the year ahead.
Healthy Living in Primary Three May 2, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3 , 1 comment so farThe p3 classes have had a great health week. We have tasted some fruits and vegetables. We have had some smoothies. We are all trying hard to bring a healthy snack to school as we have been learning how important it is to provide our growing bodies with the right types of fuel.
The dental hygienist visited and told us how to look after our teeth. She had a helper - a cheeky dog puppet who squirted us with water!! She made the session fun and we all got a pencil to remind us to keep our teeth clean while we are doing our school work.
We had a session about handwashing and we learnt that it is very important to wash your hands properly as this can help to keep germs and bugs away. We had to put some special cream on our hands and then wash them. When we had washed them we put them under a special light that showed up all the places we had missed as blue patches!
As a part of our home learning we have been doing a mini fitness challenge - trying to beat our own best effort and increase our levels of stamina. This has been great fun. We have been keeping a food diary to see if we are managing to eat 5 different fruits and vegetables every day.
Today we are looking forward to doing some whole school aerobics in the playground. Luckily the sun is shining and it will be great to exercise in the fresh air!
Ready For Take Off - P3’s Trip To See Concorde March 10, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3 , 6commentsIt was a wet and windy Monday when Primary 3 jetted off to East Fortune for our outing to The Museum of Flight. We had great fun listening to Robert the storyteller. He told us all about the history of transport. We were fascinated by the story of Icarus and his wax wings. Some of us got to practise our miming skills. We helped Robert to act out a horse and cart, canoeing, an old motor car and an early aeroplane. We also got to make and test our own aeroplanes. Unfortunately they were only made of paper. The highlight of our trip was our visit to Concorde. We were amazed by how narrow it was inside and how many buttons there were in the cockpit.
World Book Day - P3 March 8, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3 , add a commentWe had great fun on World Book day. Many of the children dressed up as their favourite characters from books. There was an extra teacher in P3A - Professor McGonigle who was not at all impressed with her pupil’s (Harry Potter) attempts at transfiguration! Milly Molly Mandy and Clarice Bean were very well behaved - perhaps due to the presence of a police officer (from the Cops and Robbers book by Allan Ahlberg). There was also an element of glamour and sparkle with Cinderella, Beauty and Ruby the red fairy!! We were all afraid of the terrifying pirate but she was very careful with her hooked hand and we all escaped safely at the end of the day!
In 3B there were some worried looks as Horrid Henry swaggered in beside Robin Hood. There was also a very frightening looking pirate and the wrestler John Cena. The bouncy cheerleaders from High School Musical managed to keep the caveman under control and the monster (from Scooby Doo) and the skeleton were not any trouble!!
We all got together with the P4’s for some buddy reading and it was great fun sharing our books. At the end of the day we held an assembly so we could see the wonderful outfits and enjoy hearing about some of the fantastic characters in our favourite books. It was lots of fun!!
P3 Letter Writing February 25, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3 , add a commentPrimary 3 have started learning to write letters. We all wrote an invitation to a sleepover. Pupils had to plan for themselves what their guest would need to bring and what activities they would do at their sleepover. They also had to use some of the conventions of letter writing to open and close their invite. If you could take some time to show your child some letters you have received we would be very grateful.

Posted by kcolver in : P3 , 2commentsP3 had a great day of showing our appreciation for each other. We began the day by making a Friendship Book. We all had to write a positive comment for every person at our table. We tried to be very specific in our comments and make each comment personal to each person.
We had lots of fun designing valentine cards in an enterprising way. We had to make choices about which way to fold our cards, which types and colours of paper to use and what type of message to write inside.
In the afternoon the P4’s very kindly invited us to go and play some board games they had designed. They showed us how to play and explained the rules carefully. Some of us even won prizes!
Later we made friendship bracelets using wool. Some of us found plaiting very tricky and there were a few knots to untangle but we persevered and got there in the end!!
All of the P3 and P4 classes enjoyed a lively sing-a-long at the end of the day. We sang some of our favourite Fischy Music songs and a few children performed a song from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat for us. It was a very busy day!!
P3 Science Week Visit February 13, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3 , add a commentThe P3 classes enjoyed a visit to the National Museum Of Scotland as part of our work during science week. We have been learning all about forces. We had an opportunity to explore forces at work in the Connect Gallery and then we attended a show called Alex’s Amazing Adventure. We had to solve problems to help Alex deliver a birthday present and help her to travel over water, along roads and over cliffs using different forces and types of transport. Some children even managed to get a ride on a hovercraft!
Both classes continued this work with lots of active learning experiments. P3a did some work on freezing and melting. The children tried to develop some insulation to prevent their ice cubes from melting. They also found out that ice melts more quickly in water.
P3b have been doing some work on floating and sinking. They worked together in small groups to find out which classroom objects float and which sink.
