This term primary 1 are lucky enough to be getting the art specialist. Each house will spend 2 afternoons with her. Carlyle have been already. They made a beautiful autumn painting and some oil pastel fish pictures! Have a look at our funky fish! The other two houses will go over the coming weeks. They are looking forward to it!

We have all had a chance to get some fresh air, exercise and learn a lot about nature during our first day out in primary 1. The three houses went out on separate days and we were all blessed with lovely weather. Thank you to Hannah the ranger for helping us learn so much, and a BIG thank you to the parents who came along. Always very grateful for your support.

It’s nice to see everyone back after the holidays. For those of us who stayed here it was nice to see a little sun!

Primary 1 are refreshed and raring to go. We have our reading books now and are doing well in remembering OUR reading bags and their contents everyday! It is amazing what we have remembered from last term.

Here are a few photos from this week - see what we have been up to so far.

Enjoy

Our First Day In Our Gymkit! September 16, 2008

Primary 1 have been to the gym a number of times since starting school however we had not ventured to the land of gym kits. It took us a wee while to get grips with shorts, t-shirts and gym shoes. We got there in the end and had a successful fun time. Could we please send out a little reminder to make sure the gym bag and contents are labelled with your child’s name.
Thank you

Golden Challenge Day in P1 September 15, 2008

Being in Primary 1 has been challenge after challenge for us all so we were well prepared for the challenges of Golden Challenge Day.

Challenge 1 was to create a monster/creature using our imagination! The children had shown great interest in the dinosaurs within the Primary 1 area and enjoyed hearing stories about them. We looked at the monsters in the book The Monster Pack and some aliens from another book. We thought about the kinds of things our creature may need - legs, heads, eyes etc. We then talked with friends before designing our creatures. The teachers were really impressed! Some were really scary!

Challenge 2 involved us working collaboratively to create a den/house/building that our creature would enjoy being in. We could choose the materials to use - junk, lego, bricks or a selection of other construction material. We could also choose who to work with. We found this challenge really hard - working together and compromising is a huge skill to learn and will take many of us years to perfect. However we all gave it a good go!! Well done!

We also spent part of the day looking at poems - challenging our beliefs and thoughts. We focused on the poem If I Wasn’t Me by Alan Ahlaberg. We talked about who we would like to be for the day if it was possible. Some chose our parents, others super hereos and others jobs they would like to do. It was great fun and hopefully the parents will enjoy looking at them on Thursday.

Welcome to Primary 1! September 9, 2008

Well we have nearly made it to the September break! The 75 boys and girls in primary 1 are beginning to settle in and are trying hard to remember all the routines. Thankfully we now realise that trays are not for emptying are packed lunch boxes into and that when a teacher’s hand is in the air she is not just trying to reach the ceiling!
Some of us are beginning to learn our numbers and letters. We spend some time during self selection/active learning practising what we have learned. We have also heard some stories about Elmer and more importantly Biff, Chip and Kipper! Miss Macnaughton even learned why they had such strange names.
We are now looking forward to Golden Challenge Day on Thursday.

P1 - Looking After Birds In Winter February 13, 2008

P1 have been thinking about looking after animals and birds in winter and the teachers have encouraged this responsible citizenship. After exploring the school wildlife garden and bird table they decided to make wild bird cake. They used lard and bird seed, and paired it into cups with string, to hang their cakes.
