We will be learning about the member states and how the EU effects us here in Scotland. P6b will be posting news and images of project work on their website (you can find us on the Class Blogs links), and P6a will do the same once their blog is up and running!
P3 Golden Challenge Day September 23, 2008
Posted by kcolver in : P3, Uncategorized , 3commentsWe had an interesting Golden Challenge day in Primary Three. We all began our day with a physical challenge that involved doing as many star jumps, hops on the left foot and then the right foot and bunny hops as we could in 30 seconds. It was much harder than it sounds!! We had to note how many we managed in each category and then in the afternoon our challenge was to beat our own record.
Each teacher prepared a different challenge and the three classes went round each challenge.
- Challenge 1 - the dessert challenge - was to work collaboratively to design a special birthday dessert. The children had to work in groups of 3, 4 or 5 ensuring that their new dessert included at least one ingredient from everyone’s favourite dessert. They then had to make a collage of the new dessert with everyone making a part of it.
- Challenge 2 - the story telling challenge- also involved working in a group. Each group was given several props or visual aids. They then had to use these to develop a story and then tell the story to the other groups. This was very tricky as some children were shy about talking in front of an audience but the rest of the group tried hard to lend their support and encouragement.
- Challenge 3 - the decision making challenge - was to make joint decisions about resources needed for a variety of projects. Children had to give opinions and justify their positions in order to come to a consensus. This was a challenge which taught the children a lot about working together.
We ended the day with some singing. We chose to sing the Fischy Music song “Why?” and we talked about some of the difficult questions it raised. We came to the conclusion that there can be more than one answer to a problem and that some questions are very difficult to answer. We really enjoyed challenging ourselves and we are looking forward to many more challenges in the year ahead.

Golden Challenge Day in P1 September 15, 2008
Posted by kmcnaughton in : P1 , add a commentBeing in Primary 1 has been challenge after challenge for us all so we were well prepared for the challenges of Golden Challenge Day.
Challenge 1 was to create a monster/creature using our imagination! The children had shown great interest in the dinosaurs within the Primary 1 area and enjoyed hearing stories about them. We looked at the monsters in the book The Monster Pack and some aliens from another book. We thought about the kinds of things our creature may need - legs, heads, eyes etc. We then talked with friends before designing our creatures. The teachers were really impressed! Some were really scary!
Challenge 2 involved us working collaboratively to create a den/house/building that our creature would enjoy being in. We could choose the materials to use - junk, lego, bricks or a selection of other construction material. We could also choose who to work with. We found this challenge really hard - working together and compromising is a huge skill to learn and will take many of us years to perfect. However we all gave it a good go!! Well done!
We also spent part of the day looking at poems - challenging our beliefs and thoughts. We focused on the poem If I Wasn’t Me by Alan Ahlaberg. We talked about who we would like to be for the day if it was possible. Some chose our parents, others super hereos and others jobs they would like to do. It was great fun and hopefully the parents will enjoy looking at them on Thursday.
Golden Challenge Day in Primary 6 September 11, 2008
Posted by Miss Collins in : P6, Uncategorized , 12commentsWell! It has been a very busy, challenging and fun-filled day for P6!
All 60 were divided into 3 groups and then 4 teams within those groups, mixing boys and girls from each class together. Each group then spent an hour in three different ‘challenge zones’
Zone 1 was the Mental Challenge room, where Ms Leyland had a whole assortment of games and puzzles. Some favourites were Kim’s Game, Who Am I?, Suduku and Tangrams.
Zone 2 was the Teamwork Challenge with Mrs Simkins. Each team were given paper plates, straws for handles and spaghetti, and between them had to get as many pieces of whole spaghetti in their bucket as possible. This involved a great deal of trial and error as I am sure the children will say in their comments here!
Zone 3 was mainly Physical Challenges out in the playground with me. Our first activity saw teams joining up… so much that they were a Human Knot, and they had to unravel themselves into a circle without letting go of each other’s hands. This took a good deal of communication and perseverance! Our second activity was a physical problem solving task. Teams had to work out how a farmer could cross a river to get to market with his sack of grain, a goose and a fox. The problem was that he could only take one item at a time and neither the goose and the fox, or the goose and the grain could be left together unattended. What was fantastic about this was that it really got everyone thinking and teams come up with some very creative and ingenious ideas as well as the official solution.
Photos were taken in each of the Zones, but here are a couple of pictures from the adventures in Zone 3 for starters!

September 11th 2008 is Golden Challenge day at Campie, and children from the Nursery up to P7 are getting involved with a huge variety of challenging activities!
Welcome to Primary 1! September 9, 2008
Posted by kmcnaughton in : P1 , 3commentsWell we have nearly made it to the September break! The 75 boys and girls in primary 1 are beginning to settle in and are trying hard to remember all the routines. Thankfully we now realise that trays are not for emptying are packed lunch boxes into and that when a teacher’s hand is in the air she is not just trying to reach the ceiling!
Some of us are beginning to learn our numbers and letters. We spend some time during self selection/active learning practising what we have learned. We have also heard some stories about Elmer and more importantly Biff, Chip and Kipper! Miss Macnaughton even learned why they had such strange names.
We are now looking forward to Golden Challenge Day on Thursday.
