EAST LOTHIAN SCHOOLS LEAD THE WAY ON INTERNET SAFETY TRAINING May 30, 2008

Posted by Steve Wood in : Parents , 2comments

In June this year, East Lothian Council, in partnership with Lothian and Borders Police, will be hosting a series of Internet safety and responsible use training sessions for parents with pupils in P5 - S6 across the county.  This is in response to growing concerns, expressed by individual parents and parent councils, about how to make sure young people use the internet safely and responsibly. The sessions are also designed to show parents how they can protect their youngsters from on-line dangers.The training sessions will be led by Ollie Bray (Depute Head at Musselburgh Grammar School) and PC David Gunn from Lothian and Borders Police. Both Mr Bray and Mr Gunn are accredited Ambassadors of the Child Exploitation Online Protection Agency (CEOP).The training session has already been piloted within the Musselburgh Cluster and received positive response from over 200 parents. The content of the evening includes background information on new technologies and information about computers and mobile phones and the law. But the main part of the presentation involves Mr Bray taking the parents into some ‘real’ social networking spaces that young people use. This includes Habba Hotel, Teenspot, MSN Instant Messenger and Bebo. The session also gives advice on how you can protect your home computer and advice on on-line gaming.Everybody who attends the training will have access to a comprehensive on-line handout.

The sessions will be held at:

        *       Preston Lodge High- 3 June 2008
        *       Ross High - 10 June 2008
        *       Dunbar Grammar - 11 June 2008
        *       Knox Academy - 18 June 2008
        *       North Berwick High - 24 June 2008

All training sessions will take place between 7 - 9pm.

Ollie Bray, Depute Head at Musselburgh Grammar School, says:
‘This is a very exciting time for East Lothian to be leading the way in Internet Training for staff, parents, families and pupils.  We are going to use the feedback we gain from these sessions to inform good practice nationally through the Scottish Learning Festival.’

These evenings will start promptly at 7pm and have a limited availability. If you have any queries or you would like to book a place on one of these sessions, please email Tess Watson, (Acting Education Support Officer) at  twatson at eastlothian.gov.uk or log onto -

Primary 7 pupils are taking part in a very exciting transition project that is happening across the Musselburgh cluster. We are using the Guitar Hero software as a tool for learning and playing! Pupils are forming their own bands, writing songs and music tracks, designing logos and much, much more!

We will be posting lots of information about the work that we are doing in June, but for now here are a couple of photos of P7b in action!

Choices for Life May 22, 2008

Yesterday Primary 7s headed to The Royal Highland Conference Centre for something really different: Choices For Life.

There were hundreds and hundreds and HUNDREDS of 11 and 12 year olds from all across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and many of them also had blue jumpers, but luckily this didn’t cause too much confusion in the end!

Choices For Life is a show designed to highlight the difficult choices pupils will face in regards to peer pressure, fitting in, tobacco, drugs and alcohol as they move up through secondary school. There were real life stories, a mini-soap, a game show, a very powerful play, and lots and lots of music to jump around to!

It was a really great concert and I am sure that there will be lots of comments here about it!

Last week our P7 pupils joined forces with P7s from Pinkie St Peter’s to solve a murder! The Chalkwell murder was solved by our joined Forensic Science teams in a matter of hours by testing the reactions of chemicals found in samples of soil and clothing at the scene…

This week all the primary five classes walked up to Newhailes woods as part of our John Muir Award.  We made a human tree, identified trees from their leaves and played a game about growing a seed.  We al had a really good time even though we were tired from walking so far.  We are well on our way to getting our John Muir Award by the end of term.

As the grand finale to Health Week, the whole school (apart from some staff members… they know who they are…) took part in an outdoor aerobics session in the playground.

The stereo was blaring, the sun was shining, and Mrs Jeffries lead the school from her platform in a high-energy workout! It was great fun!

Until I can get my slideshow to work, here are just a few of our photos of this memorable event, all of which were taken by Jordan in P6/7 -well done Jordan!

The Family of Mankind-p3/p4 Assembly May 9, 2008

Alien Invasion at Campie! The p3 and p4 pupils put on a spectacular assembly highlighting the needs of mankind. Here in p4, we opted to explain the need for education and how Campie School is a fine example of the Family of Mankind. During the assembly 4 ‘aliens’ crashed their spaceship and were curious to know the meaning of school and everything that we do at Campie. The p4 pupils did a great job explaining how we learn and how we get along at Campie. The ‘aliens’ returned to the planet Zorgo full of excellent ideas about how to open their own school. We finished the assembly on a high note by singing ‘We are Family’.

Healthy Living in Primary Three May 2, 2008

The p3 classes have had a great health week. We have tasted some fruits and vegetables. We have had some smoothies. We are all trying hard to bring a healthy snack to school as we have been learning how important it is to provide our growing bodies with the right types of fuel.

The dental hygienist visited and told us how to look after our teeth. She had a helper -  a cheeky dog puppet who squirted us with water!! She made the session fun and we all got a pencil to remind us to keep our teeth clean while we are doing our school work.

We had a session about handwashing and we learnt that it is very important to wash your hands properly as this can help to keep germs and bugs away. We had to put some special cream on our hands and then wash them. When we had washed them we put them under a special light that showed up all the places we had missed as blue patches!

As a part of our home learning we have been doing a mini fitness challenge - trying to beat our own best effort and increase our levels of stamina. This has been great fun. We have been keeping a food diary to see if we are managing to eat 5 different fruits and vegetables every day.

Today we are looking forward to doing some whole school aerobics in the playground. Luckily the sun is shining and it will be great to exercise in the fresh air!
