P1 - Looking After Birds In Winter February 13, 2008

Posted by kmcnaughton in : P1 , 3comments

P1 have been thinking about looking after animals and birds in winter and the teachers have encouraged this responsible citizenship. After exploring the school wildlife garden and bird table they decided to make wild bird cake. They used lard and bird seed, and paired it into cups with string, to hang their cakes.

P4 Are Having Good Vibrations!! February 13, 2008

P4 enjoyed a visit from the Good Vibrations Roadshow. The children learnt how sound can travel. Several of us had the opportunity to take part in the show. The maestro and Bella demonstrated with our help how sound moves through the air, water and solids.

In class our science topic is water and we have been learning how to save water. Remember to turn the tap off when you clean your teeth! We have also been learning about how the water cycle works.

P6 News- Science Week February 13, 2008

During Science Week Primary 6 and 6/7 attended Dr. Bunhead’s Boogie Factory, headlined by Dr. Molecule. Science experiments were the order of the day: exploring materials, making predictions and finding out how science experiments result in making things that are used in everyday life. There were some explosions and certainly some slimy and gloopy substances which looked highly suspect! However, there was much audience involvement, many laughs and Dr. Molecule wowed us with her knowledge and performance.

Some pupils from Primary 6/7 took part in a Science Week Road Show for Primary 1. The pupils presented a series of experiments for the Primary 1s to watch, respond to questions, and participate. They made some great predictions and listened brilliantly. The focus of the experiments were on Forces, Mixing, Vibrations, Floating & Sinking, Bubbles and Changing State. It was a wonderful experience for the P6/7s to organise and present and for the Primary 1s to learn about Science.

P5 Science Week February 13, 2008

We recently had our school science week which we all really enjoyed. Our topic was sound and light. We took part in lots of experiments in class and we even had a visiting show called ‘Good Vibrations’. Maestro and his assistant showed us how sound travelled through different materials. We especially liked the rap we created at the end of the show.

We are continuing to look at sound and light in class for the next few weeks. We will post some pictures on the website soon so you can see what we’ve been doing.

P3 Science Week Visit February 13, 2008

The P3 classes enjoyed a visit to the National Museum Of Scotland as part of our work during science week. We have been learning all about forces. We had an opportunity to explore forces at work in the Connect Gallery and then we attended a show called Alex’s Amazing Adventure. We had to solve problems to help Alex deliver a birthday present and help her to travel over water, along roads and over cliffs using different forces and types of transport. Some children even managed to get a ride on a hovercraft!

Both classes continued this work with lots of active learning experiments. P3a did some work on freezing and melting. The children tried to develop some insulation to prevent their ice cubes from melting. They also found out that ice melts more quickly in water.

P3b have been doing some work on floating and sinking. They worked together in small groups to find out which classroom objects float and which sink.

As you can see from comments on P7b’s blog, Lagganlia truly was the highlight of last term! We all had a brilliant time up in the Cairngorms going Mountain Biking, Gorge Walking, Tree Climbing, Archery, Snow Blading, Orienteering, and Snowboarding… to name but a few! Here are some of our photos:

P7 Science Week 2008 February 13, 2008

Along with the rest of the school, we really enjoyed our events and activities in Science Week 2008.

On Wednesday afternoon 18 P7 and 6/7 pupils visited the Nursery and Primary 1 open plan with our Science Roadshow. We demonstrated a range of experiments designed to get the younger children talking about and excited about science. These included floating and sinking, vibrations of sound, magical magnet tricks, and beautiful bubbles! We had lots of eager volunteers and assistants raring to try the experiments out for themselves.

On Thursday we had a visit from Dr Molecule and her brilliant Bogey Factory! We saw how polymers can change and form new materials, such as fake snow… and a very bogey-like substance! We were also amazed by acid turning solid carbon dioxide into dry ice tumbling from containers and putting out candles. It really got us talking!
