Duke Of Edinburgh Award Networking. December 12, 2006
Posted by Bill in : Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Outdoor Education, Users Group Meeting , trackbackRecently one or two schools have been asking us for advice on running D of E Awards. I am quite keen to get a meeting
set up (potentially at Outdoor Education users group meeting Wed. 14th March 2007) with all the staff in schools who are involved in the award as I feel most of the expertise in running awards is within the Secondary Schools although there are stand alone community based groups. I think a meeting could have several benefits:
- Let aspiring D of E leaders see what others are doing and encourage them to run awards
- Let current leaders share ideas i.e.share current exped planning and routes
- Develop new ideas for running expeditions
- Develop partnerships for running awards i.e. more trainers, assessors.
- Share good practice
- Celebrate success
I will contact all the staff I know who are involved in awards to see if they would attend. I also mentioned this in our new winter newsletter which is available at www.eloe.ik.org (click on noticeboard). Look forward to hearing peoples thoughts on this. I will email all I know involved and perhaps people could leave comments on this blog so I can track interest.

We used to hold E.Lothian meetings and have an E.Lothian chair person in place. These were initiated by Myra Galloway - the E. Lothian Operating Authority. Chair person is Sylvia Bates.
We really should get together as we are running these without support from the D of E network. I aslo think there should be a Wild Pannel in place so that assessors can be sorted and routes vetted. Dave Habgood was willing to do this but never heard back from Myra!

Bill, I agree wholeheartedly with your suggestion. The more joined up working that takes place within East Lothian the better as far as I’m concerned! Count me in!

Bill,
We’re in the process of starting up a group in Musselburgh Grammar School and I think this session would be invaluable to ourselves and agree with George Sim. Count me in too!

Thanks for all your comments so far. Some comments received via email too;
“Hi Bill
Tried to reply to your email via blog but it won’t accept it! But then again I’m not that great at technology
Happy to come along - do you want me to ask the other folk along who assist with groups?
Myra Galloway”
“Hi Bill
I agree and have tried to blog too… it thinks I’m spam!
Would be keen to have a meeting

Bill’s idea sound great. HOWEVER, I took the leap and I am trying to run a small Silver group and can’t wait until March to meet up and network. I’m struggling/nervous/panicking at the moment in setting up a Silver Award, particularly the expedition. Bill has been superb and he has offered lots in the preparation/ carrying out of the expedition but I need to speak to others who run expeditions with school groups. How are they run? Timscale, etc, etc.
Im totally new to this.
Help!
