Healthy Schools

June 6th, 2007 by Angus MacRury

We have just been notified that we have received Level 1 accreditation as a Healthy school.

Our PT Nichola Binnie has invested a great deal of time and effort compiling the portfolio of evedence. Her professionalism and dedication to the remit was of the highest quality. In order to achieve stage 2 accreditation we are determined to get more parents and community members involved.

Aims of Health Education at Innerwick

Health education while being a discrete area within the curriculum, also permeates the academic and social aspects of school life. All staff, both teaching and non-teaching, have a responsibility to promote health education. The aims, therefore, cover both the planned and opportunistic promotion of healthy living, which is part of the school ethos. Interactive learning and teaching methods offer an effective method of delivery, staff should also provide a consistent, supportive and encouraging school environment.

At Innerwick we aim

·        To increase pupil’s knowledge and understanding of a range of health and lifestyle issues

·        To develop skills to enable pupils to take responsibility for their own health

·        To share experiences and discuss relevant issues

·        To explore feelings and emotions, values and attitudes

·        To provide opportunities for pupils to value themselves and gain in confidence

·        To enable pupils to take positive action, with regard to their own health and that of their families

·        To encourage pupils to become active members of their community and to raise awareness of what contributes to a healthy environment.

Pollicy in action

In the past year we have ran after school activities 4 days a week. All the staff in the school run these on a voluntary basis. In total each group has averaged 17 pupils per activity this is with a roll of 38. The total number of children benifiting over the year is 2312 pupils. Our after school activities now extend from Nursery to p7 and parents are invites too. The majority of our activities promote and extend development in health and healthlifstyles. This term we are running Club Golf, Footbal Tutoring, Athletics and Computing.

Creating Blogs

June 4th, 2007 by Angus MacRury

Today I am introducing the Primary 4 and 5 pupils to creating their own weblogs. This is really difficult as the connectivity is the reason that I have not been posting for the last few months. Hopefully with SWAN we will be able to use edubuzz to creat weblogs for all our pupils from P4 to P7.
