Martin Luther King Jr
12 11 2007This morning the children were learning about Martin Luther King Jr and why sometimes rules can make people angry.
I read The Story of Martin Luther King Jr to the class and the learning intention for them was to be able to retell the story. Each page of the book contained at least one word in coloured writing e.g. preacher. We talked about why the author had done this - to emphasise the meaning and the improtant parts. The children were then given a Clicker 5 grid of the words and were asked to choose a partner. They were then to retell the story to each other and then the class!
This learning was not the pupils choice but Claire and I felt it linked in with the topic and could be cross curricular particularly with the children creating their own communities/desert island and their making of rules for them. Our Health topic is also feelings and relationships and so it links closely with that as well.
The children responded really well to the text and could discuss why they thought it was wrong and what good it did with Martin Luther King Jr sticking up for his beliefs.
