Primary 2 Project Challenge!
5 11 2007I am now working within my own school - Campie Primary School, Musselburgh - with P2a and Miss Claire Flagerty. The 3 main outcomes for the project are: that the children will understand their basic needs (physical and emotional) and be able to to identify ways in which they are met, that the children will understand rules and the need for them,
and the children will know that there are different viewpoints within a disagreement.
The first week after the holidays involved Miss Flagerty and I trying to separately mindmap these descrete LI’s with the children. Our official project title was Living and Working Together - we have decided this is not very inspiring and are now close to finally choosing a different title - with pupil choice!! At last!
These mindmaps gave us a basis to start planning a rough outline for the project on where we thought the children needed to develop their ideas. We have come up with a number of cross curricular links that we hope we can then develop as appropriate depending on the childrens’ interests throughout the term. A rough idea is to:
look at rules within and outwith school e.g. after school clubs,
Desert Island Game - needs and wants to survive. This will be developed over a period of time, and maybe onto developing their own island or community with rules etc. Maybe a walk round Musselburgh to think about what they have in own community.
making up games in PE with own rules and teaching to others,
touch on 10 commandments and maybe Marin Luther King (have a good infant book on rules related to this),
police visit,
visit from someone who has been to areas of Africa where some basic needs are not met (then maybe moving on to a bigger focus on this depending on pupil interest)
and there should also be a large number of literacy links e.g. posters, reports etc.
If anyone has any good ideas to develop this further let us know. Again we will be thinking about observations and conversations with the children and taking it from there.
Thanks Kat
