P4/5 Activity Zones February 9, 2010

We have a Maths, Language and a Topic zone in our classroom and during the week we visit each zone to practise different skills or to learn more about our topic. This week we have been writing weather forecasts in our topic zone, practising money skills in our maths zone and writing haiku poems in our language zone.

P5/6 have been learning about writing Newspaper Articles. We have been writing catchy headlines.

 

One way of making an interesting headline is to use alliteration. This is when each word of the headline begins with the same letter or sound. Here are some examples:

 

‘Sinbad Sails the Seven Seas’

‘Wicked Witch Wails After Wizard’

‘Terrible Twins Tease Tiger’

‘Horrible Harold Has Horrifying Holiday’

 

Another way is to use a pun. A pun is a kind of joke or play with words.

 

‘Hole Found In Road. Police Are Looking Into It’

‘Sleepless Knights At Haunted Castle’

‘Witch Halloween Trick Can You Do?’

‘Sew Far, Sew Good For The New Embroidery Club’

 

We have had great fun thinking of these catchy headlines. Can you think of any more?

Morning nursery explore dinosaurs! February 3, 2010

The morning nursery children are learning about dinosaurs. Clara brought her favourite dinosaur story. Everyone enjoyed listening to the story and spotting ‘wow’ words. Instead of water we have gloop in the water tray so that we can make volcanoes. Some children have learned how to use stencils to make dinosaur shapes.

the P7’s have been doing a maths topic on 3D shapes. They were recently given a challenge to use 3D skeleton shapes to design an interesting object. The photographs show their final designs.

 

P4/5 visit P1 February 2, 2010

P4/5 has been learning about weather. P1 were very interested in their topic and invited some of the children to share their learning with the class. The P1’s asked some very interesting questions and enjoyed seeing and hearing some of the posters, mind maps and poems.

 

P3/4 active maths February 2, 2010

P3/4 have been active mathematicians!  We have been incorporating physical activity to provide us with results which we used to create bar charts.  An example of these activities included measuring the distance of our jumps, jogging on the spot for 1 minute then recording our heart rate, jumping through a hoola hoop as many times as we could in 1 minute, etc.  Each pupil was given an important role within the group to make sure the task was carried out the best we could.  This included a time keeper, a recorder, a motivator, a chairperson, etc.            

  

P4/5 water cycle February 2, 2010

P4/5 has been learning about the water cycle as part of our weather topic. We reconstructed the water cycle display made by the P3/4 class to show our understanding of the water. We worked as a team in our groups and had to discuss what we had learnt about the different stages of the cycle in order to be successful .

P4/5 maths money February 2, 2010

P4/5 has been learning about money. We have been practising how to work out the total of the prices of items and how to work out the change we would receive. Today we completed a ‘How Would You Spend’ activity. We either had £100, £1000 or £10 000 to spend. We really enjoyed using our money skills in this challenge!
