On Friday P4/5 took part in the Lennox Award Ceremony organised by East Lothian Library Service. The children had to read a selection of books by three different authors: Ali Sparkes, Jonny O’Brian and Teresa Bresslin. We then had to vote for our favourite author. P4/5 voted for Ali Sparkes as we found her books had the easiest plots to follow and we enjoyed the adventurous stories. For the ceremony we had to choose an author to champion and not surprisingly we chose Ali Sparkes. We then created our own newspaper, The Daily Sparke, writing newspaper articles based on the stories she has written. In art we created new front covers for her books. We shared some of these with the audience on Friday as well as our new front covers. We think that Ali Sparkes enjoyed what we had done and she even autographed our work afterwards. The winner of the vote for the best author was announced and we were really pleased to find out that Ali Sparkes won, well done Ali Sparkes! Take a look at the photo’s below:

The P4/5 class are going to the Corn Exchange on Friday morning to take part in the Lennox Award Ceremony. We have been reading a selection of books from 3 different authors and have chosen to champion the author Ali Sparkes. We will have 15 minutes to persuade the audience as to why she is the best author. We are all very excited and the bus is booked. Unfortunately as of yet I have been unable to secure any parent helpers. I know it is a busy time of year and for those of you with children in other classes it is difficult, but if anyone could spare Friday morning we would very much appreciate it. The bus leaves at 9.00 and returns by 12.30 at the latest. Please either contact me or the school office if you can help out.

Many thanks,

Mrs Thomas and P4/5

Literacy/Topic – we will be creating our own newspaper this term so most of our literacy work will be centred on the production of ’The Yester Gossip’! We will be practising writing catchy headlines, attention-grabbing first sentences, interview techniques and lots more. There will be a big focus on grammar and punctuation. Interviews for jobs on the newspaper will be held week beginning 30th April so good luck all you would be journalists! As well as this we will be continuing with reading and spelling as usual.

Numeracy - estimating and rounding, place value refresher, addition and subtraction strategies and refresher of carrying and exchange, applying these skills in reality through money problems and running the tuck shop. Our information handling skills will be utilised in our topic work. There will be a tables challenge session every week to make sure we all have a good working knowledge of the tables before the end of the current year.

Topic – we are running a business, the Fair-trade tuck shop. Elections through the organising of a competition to design and create a banner for the Primary Youth Games.

PE – Primary 4 are going swimming and Primary 5 are learning some Hockey skills.

We are taking part in the Lennox Author Award organised by the library service and we will be taking part in the presentation ceremony on the 11th May at the Corn exchange in Haddington where we will be championing the author, Ali Sparkes.

On Tuesday 1st May, the P5s will be visiting John Muir’s Birthplace in Dunbar as part of the John Muir Citizenship project. As well as running the tuck shop, the P5s will also be setting up a stall selling fantastic RSPB pin badges at £1 each.

We are also looking forward to a visit from the Wee Night Out theatre company in early May – details will be sent home once confirmed.
